Student visa & post-study work — general guidance.

F-1 student visa. You need admission to a SEVP-approved institution, an issued Form I-20, SEVIS fee payment and a completed DS-160 before your visa interview. Show clear academic and financial evidence.

On-campus employment permitted from day one within visa limits. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation — always confirm eligibility with your Designated School Official before accepting any role.

12-month OPT after graduation. Eligible STEM degrees may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension (total up to 36 months). Employment must match your field of study.

Student visa via a licensed student sponsor. You need a CAS, meet English and financial requirements, and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Up to 20 hours per week during term for eligible degree-level students; full-time in vacation. Specific work restrictions apply — verify against your CAS.

Graduate route: two years for most applications through 31 December 2026; 18 months for applications submitted from 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates may receive three years. The Graduate route cannot be extended, though eligible switching may be possible.

Study permit issued by IRCC. Requirements include a DLI Letter of Acceptance, PAL/TAL where applicable, proof of funds, biometrics and medical exam.

Eligible students may work off-campus during the academic session within IRCC limits, and full-time during scheduled breaks. Confirm current allowed hours on the IRCC website.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) length is tied to program length. DLI status does not automatically make every program PGWP-eligible. PGWP has language requirements and field-of-study requirements for some non-degree programs — verify eligibility for the exact program before paying tuition.

Student visa Subclass 500. Requirements include CoE, Genuine Student statement, OSHC, funds/health/character evidence and English where applicable.

Most students may work up to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, and unrestricted hours during scheduled breaks.

Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) with Post-Higher Education Work stream. Stream, age, qualification and timing requirements apply — always confirm on Home Affairs before planning.

Student visa followed by a residence permit for study purposes after arrival. Requires admission, proof of living funds and health insurance.

Students may work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year, or up to 20 hours weekly (verify current rules on Make it in Germany).

Eligible graduates may receive up to 18 months to seek qualified employment matching their degree. Transition to an EU Blue Card or work permit follows.

Study is sponsored by a recognised educational sponsor. The residence permit is applied for through the IND, usually via the university.

Restricted student work: up to 16 hours per week during study or full-time in June, July and August. A work permit (TWV) is required from the employer.

Eligible graduates may apply for a one-year orientation year (Zoekjaar) to search for qualified work or start a business.

D-type long-stay study visa. After arrival, register with immigration and receive the Irish Residence Permit (IRP).

Eligible students on approved courses may work up to 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours during vacations.

Third Level Graduate Programme: 12 months for eligible Level 8 graduates, 24 months for Level 9 and 10 (subject to current rules). Verify with Irish Immigration Service before planning.

Long-stay student visa VLS-TS, validated as a residence permit after arrival through OFII.

Up to 964 hours per year (approx. 60% of full time). No separate work permit required.

Eligible master's-level graduates may apply for the APS to seek qualified employment or start a business. Duration and eligibility set by French authorities.

Residence permit for studies issued by Migrationsverket.

No formal weekly cap, but studies must remain the primary activity — full-time study is expected.
